The Series Index

Bob Zybach printed a two-tier index in the back of every monograph. Merged across all fifteen and made live, they become one index to the whole series — and every page reference is a link to the page.

Find an index heading

Look up a family name, place or subject in the books’ printed indexes. Open a heading to see its original page references.

Try Moore, oak or school. Headings and subheadings are searched together.

An index heading is a finding aid chosen for the book. A word can appear in the text without having its own heading.

A reference reads 05:47 — monograph five, printed page forty-seven. That is the citation unit Bob used across the whole series and in the thesis, and it is preserved here exactly. Click one and you land on that printed page of that transcript.

1,708 headings · 11,663 page references · 15 monographs in this reading edition.

    Why this index is living

Bob's printed indexes were compiled book by book, by hand, over twenty years. Merging them turns fifteen separate finding tools into one: a heading that appears in three books now shows all three books' pages in one place. Headings that name a place also link to that place's page, where the same references are grouped by narrator and quoted; headings that name one of the narrators, interviewers or contributors link to their page.

Two books whose index numbers run ahead

The printed indexes of #06 Hanish and #07 Olson were compiled against a pagination the finished volumes did not carry, so their references point a few pages ahead of where the text actually is — 1,644 references in all. Nothing has been renumbered. The reference the book prints comes first and is the link, exactly as printed. Where the Library has worked out which printed page the reference means, that page is shown beside it in square brackets and marked worked out, or checked where a second reader has confirmed it against the book. At present none of the 1,644 has been checked, so all of them read worked out: treat them as the Library's best reading, not as the book's word.
