Two numbers, and why they differ

Each place page shows index references (printed indexes) — how often the back-of-book indexes the books themselves print point at that place — beside transcript mentions, how often the name occurs in the transcript text; the first was chosen by the people who indexed each volume and covers only what they thought worth indexing, while the second is counted by machine over every page, so the two rarely match and neither contains the other.

8 places named in the transcripts are deliberately left off this places list and off the map: burial places, graves and artifact sites of American Indian people. The pages that give their positions are withheld with them, and so is every index reference and timeline entry that would carry a reader to those pages. This is a hold, not a deletion: the Library is consulting the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and of Siletz, whose ancestral country this is, and nothing has been altered or destroyed. The history of Kalapuyan people in this valley is not withheld — only the ground.
