David Gould, Coos Bay Timber Operators, with Umpqua Memorial stone he selected and sanded at
the Main Rock quarry in North Bend, Oregon. The rock was transported to this location at the western
mouth of Smith River where it enters the Umpqua River in Douglas County, Oregon by Coos Bay
Timber Operators and placed into position by Mast Brothers on June 21, 2023. The Memorial stone
and all related time, equipment, and services have been entirely donated to this point by these three
local businesses.
This final placement of the Umpqua Memorial stone follows more than 20 years of effort by members
of the Jedediah Smith Society. A brass plaque is being prepared that will commemorate the nearby
burial site of 11 of the 14 or 15 beaver trappers killed near here on July 14, 1828 while employed by
the Smith, Jackson & Sublette fur trading company. Burials were subsequently completed on October
28, 1828 by expedition leader and business co-owner, Jedediah Smith, and by Hudson's Bay Company
brigade leader, Alexander Roderick McLeod. Photos and captions by Bob Zybach.
