K. Beal's Swamp

Bob Zybach: What's the mileage here, Jan?

Jan Meranda: [Jan] Get off the car and I'll tell you. 12.1.

Bob Zybach: Okay, we J14st passed on the right there, we passed your family farm. It's Studach 's to your farm where the line of trees is?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: And then there's a ditch in there, and that ditch comes from the spring?

Eugene Glender: Comes by it.

Bob Zybach: By the spring?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Now was this road exactly the same place in those days as it is now?

Eugene Glender: Yeah. This hasn't been changed.

Bob Zybach: And then we ji4st passed your place [property line], passed the Wiles' fence going to the east. Whose property is this that we've come up

Eugene Glender: That was Beals [S. Eugene and Clara].

Bob Zybach: The Beal's property?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Where was their house located?

Eugene Glender: Right there across from ours there.

Bob Zybach: Okay, so we'll be coming up to the Beals house location pretty quick?

Eugene Glender: Yes.

Bob Zybach: You said you just stayed by yourself You had two sisters and everybody's far away. Did the Beals have any kids?

Eugene Glender: No.

Bob Zybach: Just a single

Eugene Glender: Oh, I guess they did, they had a daughter [Enid Beal.] but she was older than I was. I never ... she married Doctor [Arthur E.] Johnstone.

Bob Zybach: Johnstone ?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: And she was older than you, so

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

p. 36

Bob Zybach: Now the Beals ... this property here on our left was this the Beals? What kind ofproperty was this?

Eugene Glender: It was just a big swamp down in here is about all it was. A place to go down and hunt coon.

Bob Zybach: What did they call it, Beal 's swamp?

Eugene Glender: Yeah. I guess.

Bob Zybach: No name to it?

Eugene Glender: Not that I know of.

Bob Zybach: What did they do with their property?

Eugene Glender: Raised a lot of turkeys.

Bob Zybach: Did the..

Eugene Glender: Turkeys and then had sheep.

Bob Zybach: Some sheep? What did ... off on the left next to the Wiles' property then he ran sheep mostly or were there turkeys out here?

Eugene Glender: I don't think he ever had many sheep down in here, it was too swampy and too much brush down here. I can't remember him ever having anything down in here.

Bob Zybach: So this was just kind of a piece ofproperty that he didn't use?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: How about things such as this old oak; can you remember this tree?

Eugene Glender: Not really.

Bob Zybach: Did it look kind of the same?

Eugene Glender: Yeah, pretty close; didn't have those houses and stuff in there then.

Bob Zybach: You mentioned all these were split rail fences ?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Were they free standing split rails or

Eugene Glender: Criss cross.

Bob Zybach: Like the old style?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Did that have any kind of... just called split rail?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: And there'd be wood rats in those things?

p. 37

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: And anything else, other animals come in because of those?

Eugene Glender: Well, not that I know of.

Bob Zybach: Would you hunt pheasants along them?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Would there be a lot of pheasants in there nesting because of those

Eugene Glender: Sometimes.

Bob Zybach: Or jack rabbits?

Eugene Glender: Well, there were pheasants all over. You'd go all over through this country here and find pheasants.

Bob Zybach: Did the people like the pheasants pretty much?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Didn't create any problems or

Eugene Glender: No.

Bob Zybach: Any problems with hunters trespassing?

Eugene Glender: No, you didn't have that many hunters then.

Bob Zybach: So did you have very many visitors at all from outside?

Eugene Glender: Not very many.

Bob Zybach: There wasn't much traffic because it was pretty isolated?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Was that because of the Depression or because of the location?

Eugene Glender: Well it was just the days there before people moved all over everyplace. There wasn't that many houses; all you'd have is just neighbors.

Bob Zybach: Do you think it was a pretty good ljfestyle?

Eugene Glender: Oh, I think it was all right.

Bob Zybach: Had a pretty good childhood then?

Eugene Glender: Yeah.

Bob Zybach: Do you think the people were any different in those days than now?

Eugene Glender: Most of them was all friendly anyway.

Bob Zybach: So people are more unfriendly now?

Eugene Glender: Yeah. I think they are compared to what they used to be.
