In 1785, two years before the Constitutional Convention, Congress decided that one square mile in every township of the western surveys would belong to the schools — a township being the six-mile survey square the country was laid out in. Not to a church, not to a governor: to the children who would live there.

These are the Library’s own documents about that work and about itself: what it did in its first six months, what it plans to do next, the case it makes for being kept, the ways in for five kinds of reader, and one account of a collection arriving. Each is on this site as web text and as a PDF you can print. The Library is not asking you for money. It asks for documents and hands. The Library’s board adopted the six as Version 1, September 2026, by unanimous written consent on September 10, 2026; the organizational record carries the action.

Ways to Help

It is not asking you for money. It asks for documents and hands. Five ways in, and how to say yes to each.

Five cards travel with it, one for each way in. Each is four pages and stands on its own:

A note on the two PDFs

The web copy is the one to read on a screen or print at home. The press copy is print-ready, with bleed and crop marks, and is the file to hand a printer; it is larger and will look wrong on screen, because the page is bigger than the paper by the width of the trim.

How to say yes

For the three open seats, write to the President, Dave Sullivan, at drdavesullivan@gmail.com; for anything else, to the Library at library@schooltrusts.net. Say what you have done that bears on this and what you would take on. The three open seats — two Directors and the Law Librarian — are posted at Open seats. The lighter ways in — a source, a correction, a state to watch — are on the Contribute page.

The Library has not yet filed its application for federal tax-exempt recognition; it is being prepared. No federal tax-exemption determination has been issued, and until one is, the Library does not describe contributions as tax-deductible.

Drafted with an AI system for the Library’s board, from the Library’s own record, and checked against that record by people. Version 1, September 2026.
